Philodendron Burle Marx

Philodendron Burle Marx

Philodendron burle-marxii

❦ ❧ ❦

Difficulty — Beginner

A lush, sprawling philodendron of glossy heart-shaped leaves, the Burle Marx is a tireless grower and one of the most good-natured plants in my collection. She spreads with happy abandon, filling a pot with cascading green, and asks remarkably little in return. An ideal choice for the grower seeking quick, rewarding lushness.

Notes on Cultivation

Light

Bright, indirect light keeps her compact and glossy, though she tolerates medium light with admirable grace. In too little light she grows leggy and reaches, so a well-lit spot rewards you with fuller form.

Water

Water when the top inch or two dries. She enjoys consistent moisture in growth but, like all philodendrons, will rot if left to stand in water, so let her drain freely.

Humidity

Average household humidity is quite enough for her, though she grows lusher with a little more. She is among the more forgiving aroids on this account.

Temperature

Keep her between 65 and 85 Fahrenheit and shield her from cold below 55. She is tropical and resents draughts and chilly windowsills.

Soil

A well-draining aroid mix of bark, perlite, and coir gives her roots the air they crave. Good drainage is the whole secret to a happy philodendron.

Fertilizing

Feed monthly through spring and summer with a balanced fertiliser to fuel her vigorous spreading. She is a fast grower and feeds accordingly.

Propagation

She roots with the greatest of ease from stem cuttings in water or soil. So willing is she to multiply that a single plant can soon furnish an entire shelf.

Field Observations

She makes a superb hanging or shelf plant, spilling over the edge in cascades of green. A periodic trim keeps her full rather than straggly, and every trimming is a new plant besides.

Do not confuse her with the Philodendron 'Burle Marx Fantasy', a wholly different and much rarer variegated plant. This Burle Marx is the easygoing green workhorse.
