Philodendron Florida Green

Philodendron Florida Green

Philodendron 'Florida Green'

❦ ❧ ❦

Difficulty — Beginner

A handsome hybrid with deeply lobed, oak-like leaves and striking reddish stems, the Florida Green is the easygoing member of the celebrated Florida clan. Her glossy multi-fingered foliage gives her a sculptural quality, and unlike her ghostly and golden siblings she is fully green and fully forgiving — a splendid place to begin a Florida collection.

Notes on Cultivation

Light

Bright, indirect light keeps her leaves well-lobed and her stems richly coloured. She tolerates medium light but grows fuller and more dramatic in good brightness, shielded from scorching sun.

Water

Water when the top inch or two dries. She likes even moisture in growth but, as with all philodendrons, demands free drainage to keep her roots from rotting.

Humidity

Average humidity suits her, though she grows lusher with a little extra. She is among the hardier Floridas and rarely fusses over dry air.

Temperature

Keep her between 65 and 85 Fahrenheit, away from cold below 55. She is tropical and dislikes draughts and chilly glass.

Soil

A chunky, well-draining aroid mix of bark and perlite gives her climbing roots room to breathe. Sharp drainage is the heart of her good health.

Fertilizing

Feed monthly through spring and summer with a balanced fertiliser to support her steady, vigorous growth.

Propagation

Propagate from stem cuttings with a node, rooting easily in water or moist mix. She is willing and quick, much like the rest of her amiable family.

Field Observations

Her leaves grow larger and more deeply lobed as she matures and climbs — give her a moss pole and watch her come into her sculptural prime.

Of the Florida hybrids she is the fastest and most forgiving, making her my standing recommendation for anyone tempted by the rarer Ghost or Beauty but wary of their fuss.
