Philodendron Jungle Boogie

Philodendron Jungle Boogie

Philodendron 'Jungle Boogie'

❦ ❧ ❦

Difficulty — Beginner

What a name, and what a plant to bear it! The Jungle Boogie sports long, narrow, serrated leaves with a saw-toothed edge that gives her a wild, untamed silhouette quite unlike the rounded philodendrons. New growth emerges in coppery red before settling to deep green. She is bold, easy, and full of character.

Notes on Cultivation

Light

Bright, indirect light keeps her foliage dense and her serrated edges crisp. She tolerates medium light but grows more open and leggy in it, so a luminous position shows her at her best.

Water

Water when the top inch or two of soil dries. She likes even moisture during growth yet will not abide wet feet, so a freely draining pot is essential.

Humidity

She is content in average humidity but, being a true tropical, grows more lushly with a little extra. A nearby humidifier in dry winter rooms is appreciated.

Temperature

Keep her between 65 and 85 Fahrenheit, and never below 55. Cold draughts will check her growth and spoil her vigour.

Soil

A chunky, well-draining aroid mix suits her climbing roots. Bark and perlite keep the mix open and guard against rot.

Fertilizing

Feed monthly in the growing season with a balanced fertiliser to support her steady production of those handsome serrated leaves.

Propagation

Propagate from stem cuttings with a node, rooting readily in water or moist mix. She establishes quickly and grows on with enthusiasm.

Field Observations

Her coppery-red new leaves are one of her chief delights — a well-fed, well-lit plant produces them more vividly, so reward her and she will put on a show.

She has a self-heading, mounding habit rather than a long trailing one, making her a tidy and sculptural choice for a tabletop or plant stand.
