Tradescantia Zebrina — Starter
Description
✦ The Plantry Plant Co. ✦
"Small, yes — but turn a leaf over and the show begins: deep magenta underneath, two bands of metallic silver over green on top. The zebrina doesn't wait to grow up before it starts showing off." — Mr. Phileas Plant
The Plant
Tradescantia zebrina — the classic silver inch plant, sometimes called Wandering Jew — is a fast, trailing vine with lance-shaped leaves banded in iridescent silver over deep green above, and a rich, saturated purple beneath. New stems emerge nearly magenta before settling into that signature two-tone shimmer.
This is a small, affordable starter — rooted in a clear cup, with young trailing stems and fresh new growth already pushing out. It's one of the easiest houseplants to propagate — nearly any stem cutting will root in water or soil within a couple of weeks — so a full, trailing pot is never far off.
Care at a Glance
☀️ Light: Bright indirect — keeps the silver banding and purple color saturated. Low light fades both.
💧 Water: When the top inch of substrate is dry. She likes steady moisture but forgives lapses.
🌡️ Humidity: Perfectly content in average household air.
🪴 Soil: Established in Fluval Stratum.
📏 Growth: Fast trailing — pinch tips to keep her full.
⚠️ Toxicity: Sap can irritate skin and is mildly toxic if ingested — keep away from pets.
