Variegated Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum')
Description
✦ The Plantry Plant Co. ✦
"The Spider Plant is the great host of the plant world — no sooner has she settled in than she begins sending out little ones on slender arching stems, as if determined to populate every windowsill in the house. Generous to a fault, and quite impossible to discourage." — Mr. Phileas Plant
The Plant
Chlorophytum comosum in its variegated form — long, arching, ribbon-like leaves striped green and cream, here in the white-margined 'Variegatum'. It is one of the most forgiving houseplants in cultivation and a tireless propagator: mature plants throw out wiry stems tipped with "spiderettes," ready-made baby plants you can pot up, share, or simply let cascade.
Wonderfully easy and quick to fill a hanging basket. A classic for good reason — it asks little and gives a great deal in return.
Care at a Glance
☀️ Light: Bright, indirect light. Tolerates lower light, but the variegation stays brightest with good light; keep out of harsh midday sun.
💧 Water: Keep lightly moist through the growing season; let the top inch dry between drinks. Brown leaf tips usually mean she'd prefer filtered or rainwater over fluoridated tap.
🌡️ Humidity: Average household air is fine; a little extra is appreciated.
🪴 Soil: Any well-draining houseplant mix.
📏 Growth: Fast and obliging; sends out arching plantlets you can propagate endlessly.
🐾 Toxicity: Non-toxic and genuinely pet-safe — a rare houseplant cats and dogs can share a room with.
