Begonia Maculata (Polka Dot Begonia) — Fresh Growth
Description
✦ The Plantry Plant Co. ✦
"A broad, silver-spotted wing — and, tucked beside it, a new leaf unfurling in a red so bright it looks drawn on. The maculata is a plant that announces its next act well in advance. One need only watch." — Mr. Phileas Plant
The Plant
The Begonia maculata — the Polka Dot Begonia — is an angel-wing begonia from Brazil, and one of the few houseplants that looks designed rather than grown. Asymmetric olive leaves are scattered with crisp silver spots on top and flush deep burgundy-red underneath.
This is a small, affordable plant with a generous spotted leaf and fresh red growth already opening beside it, rooted in a clear cup of Fluval Stratum. She grows in canes rather than a rosette — cut her back when she gets leggy and she'll branch out fuller than before. As pictured, the large leaf has a couple of small marks.
Care at a Glance
☀️ Light: Bright indirect. Good light keeps the spots crisp and the red underside deep.
💧 Water: When the top inch of substrate is dry — she dislikes sitting wet. Water the substrate, not the leaves.
🌡️ Humidity: Happier above 50%, but adapts to household air.
🪴 Soil: Established in Fluval Stratum.
📏 Growth: Upright cane — pinch or prune to keep her branching instead of stretching.
⚠️ Toxicity: Toxic if ingested — keep away from pets and children.
