The Plant
Hoya diptera is a Pacific Islands wax plant — native to Fiji and Samoa — distinguished by thick, succulent, paddle-shaped leaves washed in a soft silver-green. The name means "two-winged," a nod to the structure of its seed pods. It is a tidy, modestly trailing grower that eventually rewards patience with clusters of small, lemon-yellow star flowers.
Because she stores water in those fleshy leaves, the Diptera is genuinely difficult to fuss to death — she would far rather be left alone than coddled. An excellent choice for the collector who travels, forgets, or simply trusts a plant to mind itself.
