Hoya Fungii
Description
✦ THE PLANTRY PLANT CO. ✦
"The Fungii is the strong, silent type of the hoya world — broad, leathery leaves, a confident habit, and when she finally flowers, clusters of pale stars that drip nectar as if showing off. Patient growers are handsomely rewarded." — Mr. Phileas Plant
The Plant
Hoya fungii — one of the Wax Plants — is a vigorous, easy-growing hoya from the forests of southern China and Vietnam, recognised by its broad, leathery, deep-green leaves marked with a paler midrib and a scattering of fine silver flecks. A robust grower and a generous bloomer once settled: its creamy, star-shaped flowers carry darker centres and are known to drip sweet nectar.
This specimen is well rooted in a clear nursery cup of Fluval Stratum, carrying seven thick, glossy leaves on a sturdy young plant. The clear cup lets you see a healthy root system for yourself before it ever reaches your shelf. Train her up a trellis or let her trail from a shelf — either suits her. Care is genuinely low-fuss: she'd rather be forgotten than fussed over, and stores water in those succulent leaves to prove it.
Care at a Glance
☀️ Light: Bright, indirect. The brighter the light (short of harsh midday sun), the better — and the likelier the blooms.
💧 Water: When the top inch of substrate is dry. She prefers to run dry over wet.
🌡️ Humidity: Content in average household air; appreciates a little extra.
🪴 Soil: Ships established in Fluval Stratum.
📏 Growth: Trailing or climbing — fast and vigorous with support or a hanging spot.
⚠️ Toxicity: Generally considered non-toxic and pet-friendly, though the milky sap may irritate sensitive skin.
