Philodendron Squamiferum — Starter
Description
✦ The Plantry Plant Co. ✦
"Look past the leaf and go straight to the stem — that's where the squamiferum keeps its charm. Every petiole comes wrapped in soft red bristles, like it borrowed a sweater from something furrier. This one's a young start, still finding its shape, but that fuzzy red stem is already unmistakable." — Mr. Phileas Plant
The Plant
Philodendron squamiferum is a climbing aroid from Costa Rica and Panama, named for the dense, hair-like red bristles (the "squamae") that cover its petioles — a trait no other common philodendron shares. Mature leaves eventually develop three deep lobes, but young plants like this one carry simple, glossy heart-shaped foliage while they establish; the trademark fuzzy red stem shows up early and only gets more dramatic with age.
This is a young rooted start, freshly potted in Fluval Stratum with established leaves and new growth already extending along that signature bristled stem. Give it something to climb as it grows and it will reward you with larger, more deeply lobed leaves. Care is easygoing — she tolerates a missed watering without complaint.
