Begonia Maculata (Polka Dot Begonia) — Established
Description
✦ The Plantry Plant Co. ✦
"Nature does not usually go in for polka dots, and yet here she is — olive wings scattered with silver, one held out broad and proud, the other still finding its angle. Turn a leaf over at least once. That red lining is half the fun of her." — Mr. Phileas Plant
The Plant
The Begonia maculata — the Polka Dot Begonia — is an angel-wing begonia from Brazil, and one of the few houseplants that looks designed rather than grown. Asymmetric olive leaves are scattered with crisp silver spots on top and flush deep burgundy-red underneath.
This is a small, affordable plant with strong spotted leaves already showing the full pattern, rooted in a clear cup of Fluval Stratum. She grows in canes rather than a rosette — cut her back when she gets leggy and she'll branch out fuller than before. As pictured, the larger leaf has a small tear along one edge.
Care at a Glance
☀️ Light: Bright indirect. Good light keeps the spots crisp and the red underside deep.
💧 Water: When the top inch of substrate is dry — she dislikes sitting wet. Water the substrate, not the leaves.
🌡️ Humidity: Happier above 50%, but adapts to household air.
🪴 Soil: Established in Fluval Stratum.
📏 Growth: Upright cane — pinch or prune to keep her branching instead of stretching.
⚠️ Toxicity: Toxic if ingested — keep away from pets and children.
