Begonia Maculata (Polka Dot Begonia) — Starter
Description
✦ The Plantry Plant Co. ✦
"Every great begonia begins as a single spotted leaf and a great deal of confidence. Silver polka dots, already perfectly placed — nature, for once, committing to the bit." — Mr. Phileas Plant
The Plant
The Begonia maculata — the Polka Dot Begonia — is an angel-wing begonia from Brazil, and one of the few houseplants that looks designed rather than grown. Asymmetric olive leaves are scattered with crisp silver spots on top and flush deep burgundy-red underneath.
This is the smallest and most affordable way to start: a young plant with a single spotted leaf, rooted in a clear cup of Fluval Stratum, with growth still ahead of it. She grows in canes rather than a rosette — as she matures, cut her back when she gets leggy and she'll branch out fuller than before.
Care at a Glance
☀️ Light: Bright indirect. Good light keeps the spots crisp and the red underside deep.
💧 Water: When the top inch of substrate is dry — she dislikes sitting wet. Small cup, so go easy. Water the substrate, not the leaves.
🌡️ Humidity: Happier above 50%, but adapts to household air.
🪴 Soil: Established in Fluval Stratum.
📏 Growth: Upright cane — pinch or prune to keep her branching instead of stretching.
⚠️ Toxicity: Toxic if ingested — keep away from pets and children.
