Monstera Esqueleto — Established
Description
Winston Flagged. Toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or eaten, and irritating to humans too — the leaves carry calcium oxalate crystals that cause immediate mouth and throat irritation. Keep it up and out of reach of pets and little hands. If a pet gets into it, call your vet or the ASPCA Poison Control line (888-426-4435) right away.
✦ The Plantry Plant Co. ✦
"A plant that has begun to reach is a plant that intends to stay. Observe how the newest growth stretches skyward on its long stem, already planning its next conquest of the wall — and how the older blade below is all lacework and swagger." — Mr. Phileas Plant
The Plant
The Monstera esqueleto (Monstera epipremnoides) is one of the most coveted aroids in cultivation. Named "esqueleto" — Spanish for skeleton — for fenestrations so dramatic they reduce the leaf to an intricate framework of veins and tissue. Native to the cloud forests of Costa Rica, this climbing beauty produces increasingly elaborate perforations as it matures.
This is a more established plant, and it shows: a broad, well-windowed leaf, plus fresh growth already reaching upward on a long, graceful stem. It is rooted into a clear cup so you can see the root system taking hold. Give it a moss pole and bright indirect light, and each new leaf will be larger and more fenestrated than the last.
Care at a Glance
☀️ Light: Bright, indirect. East or west window ideal. Direct afternoon sun will scorch the thin leaf sections.
💧 Water: When the top inch or two of substrate is dry.
🌡️ Humidity: 50–70% preferred.
🪴 Soil: Ships in Fluval Stratum volcanic substrate.
🪜 Support: A climbing vine — give it a moss pole for larger, more fenestrated leaves.
⚠️ Toxicity: Toxic to pets and children if ingested.
