✦ THE PLANTRY PLANT CO. ✦

"Turn a leaf of the Atabapoense over and you will find her secret — a deep, wine-dark underside the colour of old claret. She is named for the Atabapo, a black-water river on the Venezuelan border, and she carries something of that quiet, shadowed elegance in every long blade." — Mr. Phileas Plant

The Plant

Philodendron atabapoense is a climbing aroid from the Amazonas region where Venezuela meets Brazil, grown for its long, narrow, arrow-shaped leaves — deep matte green above and flushed a striking burgundy-maroon beneath, carried on slender petioles. Often compared to its cousin P. billietiae, the atabapoense is the more restrained of the two: narrower foliage, that signature wine-red reverse, and an altogether more brooding palette.

This specimen is settled into a clear nursery cup of Fluval Stratum, carrying two established leaves — a young, well-rooted starter ready to stretch into its own. The clear cup is no accident — it lets you see a healthy root system for yourself, the surest sign a plant is rooted in and ready to grow. Give it a moss pole and each new leaf will arrive longer and more dramatic than the last; leave it to scramble and it will oblige with equal grace. Care is refreshingly uncomplicated — she forgives the odd missed watering and bounces back without sulking.
