✦ The Plantry Plant Co. ✦
"A cactus that has quite given up on deserts — it lives in trees, trails in zigzags like pinking shears went down each stem, and then, once a year, opens enormous scented flowers overnight and closes them by lunch. Blink and you'll miss it. People do." — Mr. Phileas Plant
The Plant
Disocactus anthonyanus — the Ric Rac or Fishbone Cactus — is an epiphytic jungle cactus from southern Mexico, with flattened stems cut into deep alternating zigzags. It grows in trees rather than sand, so it wants far more water and far less sun than the word "cactus" suggests.
This one is rooted in a clear cup of Fluval Stratum with good trailing length already. Mature plants produce large, dramatic, fragrant flowers that open at night — worth staying up for.
Care at a Glance
☀️ Light: Bright indirect — an epiphyte, not a desert cactus. Direct sun will burn the stems.
💧 Water: More than you'd think — water when the top inch is dry, then let it drain fully.
🌡️ Humidity: Appreciates a little extra; content in household air.
🪴 Soil: Established in Fluval Stratum.
📏 Growth: Trailing — superb in a hanging pot.
⚠️ Toxicity: Non-toxic to cats and dogs.
